David's Wine Picks - Exciting 2013 Pinot Noirs

(posted: October 27th, 2015)

Wine glasses filled with red and white wines

In this column, published about once a quarter, David shares his passion for and expert knowledge of fine wines. In each post he offers several selections that provide great value.

He identifies wines for drinking now, which ones to put away for several years, and those that are worth enjoying now and laying in a supply for future enjoyment.

Enjoy David's Wine Picks, and let us know if there is something you'd like David to review in a future column.

Exciting 2013 Pinot Noirs

California Pinot Noir producers are excited because the newly released 2013's deliver the style and substance of the highly rated 2012 vintage.

Considering the drought conditions, the 2013 vintage has that extra something that potentially might make this an epic vintage.

Here are a few of my personal, top-value favorites:

Wine maker & Region....................................................Year...Rating...Price

Meiomi - Monterey-Sonoma-Santa Barbara Counties....2013...92.......$22

Amici - Sonoma County Olema.......................................2013...91.......$20

Bella Glos - Santa Lucia Highlands-Los Alturas..............2013...93.......$44

A.P. Vin - Santa Lucia Highlands.....................................2013...93.......$52

Kendall-Jackson - California Vitner's Reserve................2013...89.......$20

Dehlinger - Russian River Valley Altamont.....................2013...95.......$60

It might be time to increase your wine budget and lay down some of this great 2013 vintage for a few years. Of course, drinking some bottles now will only enhance your joy when you open, two to three years in the future, the bottles you have laid down.

Wine Spectator Ratings:

  • 95 - 100 Classic, a great wine
  • 90 - 94 Outstanding, a wine of superior style and character
  • 85 - 89 Very good wine with special qualities
