David's Wine Picks - 2014 California Chardonnay

(posted: July 1st, 2016)

Wine glasses filled with red and white wines

In this column, published about once a quarter, David shares his passion for and expert knowledge of fine wines. In each post he offers several selections that provide great value.

He identifies wines for drinking now, which ones to put away for several years, and those that are worth enjoying now and laying in a supply for future enjoyment.

Enjoy David's Wine Picks, and let us know if there is something you'd like David to review in a future column.

2014 California Chardonnay

With summer's arrival, it's time to look at white wines, especially the champagne of white wines, the California Chardonnay. The recent release of the 2014 vintage shows the trend on reduced tonnage, and single vineyards with low yields in an effort to produce long-lived Chardonnays. Here are a few of my 2014 favorites.

Here are a few of my 2014 favorites:

Wine maker & Region..............................................................................Year.....Rating....Price

Ridge - Santa Cruz Mountains Estate..............................................................2014.......95.....$50

Ferrari-Carano - Russian River Vly. Tre Terre Vineyard Select Collection........2014.......90.....$28

Calera - Central Coast......................................................................................2014.......90.....$20

Rombauer - Carneros Proprietor Selection.....................................................2014.......92.....$65

Barnett - Carneros Sangiacomo Vineyard.......................................................2014.......91.....$35

Chappellet - Napa Valley.................................................................................2014.......91.....$35

Landmark - Sonoma County Overlook............................................................2014.......90.....$25

It's always been hard to go wrong with California Chardonnay. So pick a few of my favorites and enjoy the summer of 2016

Guide to Ratings, From Wine Spectator:

  • 95 - 100 Classic, a great wine
  • 90 - 94 Outstanding, a wine of superior style and character
  • 85 - 89 Very good wine, with special qualities
