The Equifax Breach: Protect Yourself

(posted: October 17th, 2017)

For those of you who may not know, one of the three consumer credit reporting agencies, Equifax, reported a major hack of it's supposedly secure data in September. This breach gave the hackers access to the personal information of 143 million Americans, including Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers, and apparently happened between May and July of this year.

The magnitude of this cyber attack is such that at least one person you know will have had their data stolen.

Hackers were able to grab names, birth dates, addresses and more. Using this data, identity thieves can impersonate people with lenders, creditors and service providers, who rely on personal identity information from Equifax to make financial decisions regarding potential customers.

You can visit a website created by Equifax to determine if your data was at risk, here. You will be prompted to enter your last name and the last six digits of your SS number.

Your data may already be in the hands of the hackers, and we may not see all of this data surface for quite some time, but there are somethings you can do to protect yourself and your identity from being used by theives. Among the options are credit locks, credit freezes, and alerts.

For answers to many of your questions, and for more information about the various options to prevent use of your personal information, we suggest reading and bookmarking this article on the New York Times website.
